Lefkada is one of the main islands of the group of the seven Ionian islands known as the Ionian Islands. It is situated between Corfu and Kefalonia.
The island, with an area of ​​302.5 square kilometers and is the fourth largest of the Ionian islands with a population of 23,000. The Regional section of Lefkada consists of several smaller islands (Meganisi, Kalamos, Kastos, Scorpios, Skorpidi, Madouri, Sparta, Thilia, Kythro, Arkoudi and the smaller islands around them), with the city of Lefkada as its capital. It consists of two municipalities, the Municipality of Lefkada (which includes the whole island and the islets of Kalamos and Kastos) and the Municipality of Meganissi.
The island’s climate is Mediterranean, with plenty of sunshine throughout the year. The winters are mild, but rainy. The summers are hot, but pleasantly cool because of Maistros.
Seventy percent of the surface of the island is covered by mountains. The highest peaks are Stavrota (1.182 m), Elati (1.126 m.), Ai-Lias (1.014 m) and Mega Mountain (1012 m). The west coast of the island is fairly steep with many large sandy beaches. The landscape of Lefkada is characterized by narrow plateaus, fertile valleys and gorges. It has rich vegetation, including olive trees, cypresses, pines variety, a special variety of oak, aromatic herbs and rare flowers.
The island has many natural sources. One of the most famous sources of Kerasia in Sivros.
The coast of Lefkada is also very picturesque. Comprised of impressive beaches, peninsulas, capes and coves that make magnificent natural ports.
Beaches
Some of the most beautiful beaches in the world are located in Lefkada. These are Porto Katsiki, Egremni and Kathisma. There are other perhaps less known but equally beautiful to enjoy your bathrooms the turquoise waters of the Ionian: Grinders, Agios Ioannis, Mikros Gialos.
